October is National Architecture Month, also known in some circles as Archtober. To commemorate the month, I am going to post a brief post every day of the month.
Sometimes all it takes is a good floor to create a place. In the case of Philip Johnson’s glass house in New Canaan, Ct, all it took was a good floor and a simple roof. The space in between the roof and the floor became a place, Johnson’s country retreat.
Floors can be simple, like the brick herringbone in Johnson’s house, or complex, like the mosaic floors in the Roman villas in Pompeii. But either way, the floors can define a place. In Johnson’s house, you can see how the brick floor defines the space of the house. Likewise, the carpet defines the place of the conversation area within the house.
Floors literally ground our experience of a place. So the selection of the flooring material is critical to the experience of the room.
