Transforming problem houses into Dream Homes

Custom Cabinets

Back in the Spring of this year, I did a fun little project for friends of mine. They live in a condominium that, while it has lots of closet space, the simple developer rod and shelf in each closet just wasn’t what they needed. I was called in to help them design the storage in five closets. Today I am going to discuss one of the solutions we came up with.

Their condo has a large closet and small dry bar (bar without a sink) in the living room. Along with the entry door these make up one entire wall of the living room. We decided to remove the closet and the dry bar and replace them with a single built in cabinet. The design is shown above. The bottom of the cabinet has a row of drawers over doors.

The table top surface will be wood with a furniture detail exposed edge. in the far right hand bay, the shelves will be glass with a mirrored back. The shelves on the far left will be solid wood with a wood back. There will be lights under the bottom shelves to light the table top. The back of the table top is raised to display art objects in the lit recesses. There will also be a light above the glass shelves to highlight their collection of glassware.

The project was put on hold while the clients traveled and now for the holidays. I hope that in early 2014 we will be able to select the wood and the door hardware and see this piece built and installed along with the custom closet designs.
