It has been a while since my last post and I have been busy. The project in Fremont is complete. I will be taking the official pictures of the completed kitchen in early to mid-September. Watch this space for that.
Right now, I have a house remodeling project underway in Sunnyvale. It is a sweet 1940’s bungalow that needed some deferred maintenance. The main concerns were that the plumbing seemed to be leaking under the house and there was an active termite infestation. The client had the fumigators out to take care of the termites. But not knowing the full extent of the water and termite damage until demolition started and with a limited budget, we had to proceed with the understanding that the structural and infrastructure work had priority and that the cabinets and finishes would have to be either economical or very economical.
All of the plumbing and electrical in the house was replaced. All of the windows and doors were replaced. The old underfloor gas furnace was removed and a new wall furnace was installed. There was extensive water damage under the bathroom that required replacing floor joists and the subfloor. Fortunately, the termite damage was limited to the hard wood flooring in one of the back bedrooms. In the course of the demolition we found that a major support beam was resting on a top plate and we had to install a post to support the beam at that end. No wonder there was a huge crack in the ceiling plaster!
We have sourced almost all of our cabinets, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures and finishes from either Home Depot or Ikea. The kitchen design was “generic” until we knew where we were going to buy the cabinets. So the illustration of the kitchen, below, shows wood finished cabinets, ultimately, the owner picked white painted cabinets from Ikea and you’ll get to see those in the final photo’s coming in about two months time. We are currently selecting the back splash tiles and are looking at glass tiles in creams and bronze colors.
The change in the house already is remarkable. I am eager to see the kitchen completed. The Bathroom is already almost complete and looks good, though darn hard to photograph, given it’s size. I’ll have to give it a try with my real camera rather than my smart phone camera when the project is complete.
