Transforming problem houses into Dream Homes

Year End Random Photo #2: advice from road signs

2021 Random Photo Series

As a way of rounding out the year, I have decided to share 3 random photos from my phone each week, along with a discussion about why I took the picture. This might give you a sense of how I think and who I am.

Random Photo #2:

LOOK BOTH WAYS

All caps, Black letters on caution yellow. It doesn’t even need exclamation points.

It is also sage advice, not only for crossing the street, but also for designing buildings, and many other aspects of life.

We can get in a rut, sometimes, doing the something the same way we always have. But what if we look the other way, metaphorically? Maybe there is a different way to do it, either an easier way, or a way that results in a a better solution.

Life advice from a road sign?

Maybe, once in a while that would be a good thing.

I also love the strong graphic quality of many road signs. We all know the STOP sign: white letters on a white trimmed red octagon. The image is strong and memorable. Road signs have to be clear with strong graphics in order to get their message across quickly to drivers who are screaming along at breakneck pace.

There is probably a science to road sign design. There certainly is an art to it, too.

Cheers,

David
