October is National Architecture Month, also known in some circles as Archtober. To commemorate the month, I am going to post a brief post every day of the month.
One of my favorite buildings, one that I find not just impressive, but emotionally moving, is The Pantheon. It was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, and completed by the emperor Hadrian, taking almost 140 years to complete.
Commissioned to be a temple to all of the gods, it is a single room, round, as tall as it is wide. The idea is that you can inscribe a sphere inside the room, and therefore represent all of creation and all of the heavens. The opening in at the top of the dome, the oculus, rarely lets in water, but allows the sun to trace a path around the dome.
