October is National Architecture Month, also known in some circles as Archtober. To commemorate the month, I am going to post a brief post every day of the month.
We can use columns to define a space as well as to hold up the roof. Our Swiss-French friend, Le Corbusier, postulated that we should lift our buildings up off the ground using piloti, columns. By lifting the buildings up off the ground, we could make better use of the ground for moving people around, for gardens, and raise the living spaces up would bring in more light. (So he argued.)
columns can also define a place, as they are in this house, below, by Charles Moore. In this case, the columns define the space for the bathtub in the larger room. It both defines the space and elevates the act of bathing to something important and ritualistic by setting it apart.
Other times, it is the very nature of a room filled with columns which determines what the place is like, as in this cathedral.
