Archtober2: DaVinci’s Man

October is National Architecture Month, also known in some circles as Archtober. To commemorate the month, I am going to post a brief post every day of the month.

I believe that architecture starts with us, humans. There is no better illustration of the idea of the centrality of human beings than the image of the ideal man created by Leonardo DaVinci.

The ideal man fits inside both a square and a circle. Geometry is based on the human figure. No man really fits like this, but the Renaissance ideal sets the bar for our thinking about where human creation starts: with our physical selves. Our architecture should reflect that: it should support our lives.
